Is it a good decision to buy a cell phone on ebay?

I want a cell phone off of ebay. I don’t know if I should even though they say the phone is brand new and has a return policy. It is a Verizon prepaid Motorola Razr which is a totally awesome phone. My mom won’t let me because my aunt got two off of ebay and they both didn’t work. Does that mean the one I want won’t work too?
