Why there should be more holiday auction sites
Holidays are big business, even during recessions people take holidays. Infact, as holidays offer hope and optimism for a year, people are more eager than ever to take holiday – they just are keen to find cheaper alternatives.
The auction site eBay is one of the greatest successes of the internet age. eBay is a trading area where anybody can upload details of a product – old toys, clothes, cars, etc. – and sell it to the general public.
One this that eBay has not taken onboard as much as you might have expected, is holidays. The reasons for this are that holidays are usually booked in some bodies name and this makes them hard to transfer and sell on eBay.
Holiday auctions therefore need to originate from the provider. This is one reason that individual who rent out their own homes to holiday makers see eBay as a marketing channel. There is a low level of holiday bookings occurring on eBay, but it’s not an area they’ve developed and it still seems in infancy.
Having established that the auction model works online, and that there would be a market for holiday auctions, why are there no holiday auction sites? One online blogger has begun to browse the internet and log his reviews of holiday auction sites. The outcome is rather disappointing – there are many feeble attempts but nothing has taken off in a huge way, and many have been abandoned.
Ironically, charity holiday auctions are a huge success, with many websites running these on a short term, and businesses set up devoted to providing charity holiday auctions.
So to answer the question stated in the title of this article, why are there not more holiday auction sites? – the answer is simple – nobody has worked out how to leverage this model and make drive it enough to make it a big business.
My prediction is that the holiday auction model will grow and become popular, and soon established holiday sites will add ‘auction’ sections.
Holiday auction sites will be a great way to find good deals, will provide holiday retailers to ensure they fill any unsold space, and will create a buzz and excitement which turns booking a holiday into an even more exciting event.
